Written with the first-time spinner in mind, this book will certainly become an essential in the library of fiber enthusiasts, beginning or advanced, interested in the process of creating their own yarn.
Shannon Okey has successfully demystified spinning for the uninitiated, explaining the basics of our passion in short, easy-to-follow chapters ranging from fiber selection and preparation to the basics of hand spindles and spinning wheels, then how to spin. She addresses the issues that most first-time spinners encounter; spindle and wheel mechanics, lumpy yarns, yarns that get tangled in the flyer, how to wind off finished yarn from our wheels, and how to finish up the same. Pictures that illustrate each issue and then make the resolution approachable accompany all explanations.
Experienced spinners will benefit from this book too, enjoying profiles of famous persona with in our craft as well as nifty tricks like how to Andean Ply. Additionally, spinners who mentor new members to our community or demonstrate our craft to the public will enjoy Shannon's straightforward commentary and will likely incorporate her style into their own presentations.
The publication, in it's second half, progresses through a discussion of the differences between handspun and commercial yarns and then presents a series of patterns for projects that range from first-spun-lumpy-bumpy-yarn friendly to sophisticated garments designed by some of our discipline's luminaries.
All in all, this publication is a fast read, beautifully written and illustrated, and a joy to linger over.
