A Dye Retreat with Griffin Dyeworks

By Joey

I had fun at the retreat. There was leather-working, Viking whipcord braiding, weaving, spinning and other neat stuff. I learned how to use my lucet and inkle loom. I made a bead bracelet and I felted my own hat! My mom and I taught some people how to Tunisian crochet. My mom also learned an art called nalbinding.

The main part of the Dye and Fiber Retreat was dyeing, of course! I tie-dyed myself a very pretty shirt with the colors pink, purple, and blue using natural dyes like indigo and brazilwood. I also dyed myself a pink and blue silk scarf with natural dyes, and rainbow colors on a tote bag out of acid dyes. My mom and I dyed our handspun yarn and the hats we made by felting wool roving.

My favorite part of the retreat was when I did this thing called Kumihimo (it is a Japanese braiding). The food was really good, too! I hope I can go back to the Dye and Fiber Retreat next year with my whole family.

Joey is 7 years old. She loves to spin and crochet. She attended the Griffin Dyeworks Annual Dye and Fiber Weekend Retreat in Castaic, CA in October put on by owners Bjo and John Trimble. Joey's handspun yarns and hand-carded fairy batts are featured at goshyarnit.com.
