These aren't quite gloves but they are a bit more than a cuff. They are a great option for people who like to knit while waiting for the bus and want to keep their fingers free. I've named them Del Mar for their color, which reminds me of the countless beaches I've taken my dog to here in California . I think the stitch pattern hints at crashing waves, lapping at the shore, or maybe it's just the winter weather that has me thinking such things. The stitch pattern is very easy and you'll probably have it memorized before completing your first mitt. The scalloping is a natural byproduct of the stitch pattern and gives an elegant effect. You can play it down or up depending on how you block the piece.

Left Mitt

Instructions for S/M, M/L in brackets

cast on 34 [42] on DPNs

Place stitch marker between after 17th [21st] stitch (halfway point) and between first and last stitch to mark the end of the rounds

Work the chart for the first 17 [21] stitches, then work the remaining stitches in k1, p1 ribbing

Work in this manner for 16 rows.

Begin working back and forth for the thumb. Maintaining stitch pattern work for another 16 rows. You may opt to work this shorter or longer as is comfortable for your thumb.

When the opening is as long as you'd like, go back to working circularly for another 16 rows. For a total of 48 rows or until piece is as long as you'd like.

bind off in stockinette over the lace area and in ribbing over the ribbed area.

Right Mitt

Work as for Left Mitt only work ribbing over the first 17 [21] stitches and the lace pattern over the remaining stitches. The mitts need to be mirror images of each other.

Finishing

Using crochet hook, crochet a row of single crochets around thumb opening.

Weave in ends.

Block, making sure to adjust the lace point to fit your hand. If it rolls too much, you can add a row of SC across the top edge, working 3 sc at the point of the lace.
