Congratulations to Nancy Ratliffe of Conyers Georgia on winning the Fabulous Fiber Fest Shawl contest! All of the shawls entered were beautiful, and all contestants should be proud of the wonderful handspun works of art they created. The contest judging was a blind panel (no names were revealed to the panel of judges), and the shawls chosen by the judging panel as finalists, based on photographs, were then judged in person.

The following is the criteria used by the judges to decide the winner.

Judging Criteria

1. Overall design of shawl

  • is it wearable - good hand?
  • is the fiber used appropriate for the design?
  • is the construction method suitable for the fiber?

2. Construction

  • is the stitch or pattern well done?
  • is there consistancy in the stitches and/or repeated patterns?
  • is it well finished?

3. Artistic Merit

  • does it show good creativity and/or originality?
  • unusual but very pleasing use of color/pattern/fiber?
  • is the handspun well spun and appropriate for type
  • is it elegant, glitzy, utilitarian etc.
