Knitting Nature
By Norah Gaughan

STC Craft/Melanie Falick Books
$29.95

Once in a long time a book comes out that screams to me "buy me, buy me right away!" This is that book. I LOVE this book! Norah Gaughan has created a wonderful hybrid of nature, art, knitting and science in this lovely volume. The photography is gorgeous and the patterns are intriguing and lovely. I particularly like that Norah Gaughan first explains where in nature each pattern can be found, the symmetry or underlying mathematical concept of the pattern, and then she explores each pattern not once, but through several different iterations or interpretations of the pattern. She approaches each knit piece with the patience and curiousity of a scientist and an artist, reinterpreting it in the language of knit. The book is not just about the science though, the patterns are sophisticated and stylish and the directions are clear and concise. This book is a must for the serious knitter, the science buff, and artist!
