lambs Spindlicity-an online magazine for handspinners

By Ricky Tan

My name is Ricky Tan and I am 9 years old. I'm in 4th grade. I am in Boy Scouts, Tae Kwon Do, and I play piano and clarinet. I know how to crochet and knit a little and I just learned how to weave on a floor loom in my 4th grade class at school.

My sister taught me how to spin. I started on a drop spindle by The Dreaming Tree [an eBay seller]. It was made out of green clay and wood. Now, I spin on a "Nhewyt's Dragon" by Wooly Designs.

I am spinning faster and better now with a heavier spindle. Spinning is getting easier the more I practice. I like to spin at home, and sometimes I spin in the car or at my Grandma's house!

Black, orange and red are my favorite colors to spin. My last ball of yarn that I spun was different oranges and about 69 yards. I kind of like measuring all of our homemade yarns. First, I measure inches, then I covert the inches into yards with a calculator.

I name my yarns after elements on the Periodic Table of Elements because someday I want to become a geologist and a chemist. My first few yarns were named, "Chromium," "Xenon," and "Ununoctium."

I enjoy spinning and I will sell most of my yarns online starting in June at www.goshyarnit.com. They will be called, "Ricky's Element Yarns."

Ricky Tan, along with his sister Joey and brother Wilson, lives and spins in Murrieta, California.
