Knitting Out Of Africa
By Marianne Isager Interweave Press $24.95 Much has already been written about this remarkable book of designs, but I couldn't resist adding my two cents. I had the privilege of being able to handle first-hand some of these designs when a trunk show came to A Mano Yarn Center, where I teach knitting. As lovely as the photography in this book is, it cannot, of course, convey the tactile and visual sumptuousness of these gorgeous knits. In addition to the African-inspired color motifs, these garments use a wide range of knitting techniques, such as domino knitting, entrelac, mosaic knitting, double knitting, stranded two-color work and intarsia, in some cases in combination with cuff-to-cuff or strip-knitted construction. The designs are impeccable to the last finishing detail. This is a master knitting course disguised as a pattern book! Most knitting books in recent years have, naturally, focused on designs accessible to the newer knitters that now dominate the knitting market. It's a delight to see, once again, an ambitious book aimed at the accomplished knitter. With luck, as the latest generation of knitters ascends to expert skill levels, we'll see more of such challenging and inspirational work.
