Hello Spinners & Knitters

By Nicole

Hello spinners and knitters! My name is Nicole and I am 11 years old. I am starting the 6th grade this month. I like to sing, do arts and crafts and I take Tae Kwon Do. I have also been a Girl Scout for seven years.

I have been spinning for about 6 months. I started on an Ashford top whorl drop spindle that was my mom's. I have just started spinning on my mom's Lendrum DT. At first I did the treadling and she did the drafting. Then we switched. Within minutes I was able to do both!

I get all my fiber for spinning from sheep and wool festivals and my mom's friends. My mother belongs to a spinning group called the Bayberry Spinners and a nice woman named Mrs. Flores gave me a whole bunch of fiber to spin and felt. Right now I am spinning with two colors - one is a purple/pink and the other is a very light peach.

We might get an Angora rabbit soon. I love animals, so I am looking forward to taking care of the rabbit and being able to spin the fur too. I held one at the Massachusetts Sheep and Wool Festival. It was so soft!

I don't knit as much as I spin, but I like to felt too. With my felting I have made a ladybug, an angel, and a bear. One of my goals is to knit an iPod case. I would also like to knit a purse and a pair of socks.

The person who inspired me to spin is my mom, Donna. My yarn isn't perfect yet, of course, but I am working very hard at it. One day I would like to get my own spinning wheel. Right now my mom and I take turns with her Lendrum DT and her Merlin Tree Hitch Hiker.
