ROVING REPORTER: Santa Monica, CA
The Fabulous Fiber Fest was exactly like it sounds - nothing short of fab. With about two dozen vendors under one roof, the size was just perfect; not so big that it overwhelmed, but with enough variety to keep you interested for hours and hours. I went with my little sister who didn't know a thing about spinning, met up with fellow spinning fanatics, and by the end, we all agreed it was time well spent - there was plenty for the newbie as well as the more advanced spinner. You know it's going to be good when right at the entrance to the fest a handful of sweet and soft-as-can-be alpacas greet you. Once inside, the vendors' ware ranged from fabric, buttons, vintage jewelry, raw fleeces, spinning wheels and gadgets, books galore, and more. On display were gorgeous examples of quilts, and of course the inspiring handspun shawls from the Splindicity contest (which were even more breathtaking up close - congrats to all!). For me, the best part were the constant spinning demos, some on wheels and others done by folks just casually walking around the auditorium spinning on their spindles. Impromptu spinning lessons and knit-ins added to the great atmosphere. Many a fiber enthusiast could be seen getting ready to leave, only to be pulled into a discussion on the finer points of cotton spinning or join in exclaiming over someone's recent fiber acquisition.
