Spunky Tops Hat Contest Winners
Winner Best Use of Materials: June Boutin
Roaring 20's Hat spun from a Black Alpaca from Amber Valley Ridge in Foster RI,spindle spun on a Golding, and plyed into a sport weight. This hat was knitted from a pattern in Cast On Winter 2004 with bobbles and added crystals. The hat is super soft and has all the glamour of the roaring 1920 and crystal match the sparkle in your eyes!!!I loved working with the alpaca. This is a picture of my grand daughter wearing this very warm and soft hat.
Winner Best Use of Color: Marlene R.
Hot off the spindle and designed just for the contest, my crocheted hat with picot edging. I'd love to own one of those beautiful prize spindles, right now I spindle using my one and only, a home made "clunker" given to me by a friend. The yarn for this hat was "rescued" from a free fleece no one else could see the potential in. I scoured the stinky old fleece and then hand dyed, hand combed, spindle spun and Navajo plyed the result. I think it turned out rather well! The design for the hat is my own. It is the result of much experimentation, trial and error. In the end I decided a simple crocheted style with a little edge interest suited most people and showed off the hand dyed colors the best.
Winner Most "Over the Top": Anne O'Connor
Thanks so much for organizing this hat contest. It pushed me to create a hat of my own design. It was great fun. I used several different colored bats of wool that I purchased from Linda Diak at Grafton Fibers. I just love her colors. I wanted to include them all in my design. I knit the hat starting with 9 separate points that I joined together, then used several Fair Isle patterns separated by pin tucks and ended with some crocheted curlycues on top. Thanks again for the opportunity to push myself out of the ordinary.
